Staying fit in an IT world

I often read fitness tips around the web and I find them quite interesting. Now it's my turn.

My facts:

  • I study computer science
  • I work as a student programmer and a consultant
  • I spend most of my free time hacking around on personal coding projects

I.e. I spend most of my time in front of the computer. I must be fat? No, but I do have a six-pack on my stomach :)

How I do it

Exercise

One time in the morning (or during the day) and one time in the evening I do following:

  • 30 push-ups
  • 30 push-ups for the chest
  • 20 situps
  • 15 situps for the left side
  • 15 situps for the right side
  • General exercises for the back, neck and legs

This takes around 10 minutes. So I spend around 20 minutes on this everyday. When I do my exercise I give it the full blow - - being sloppy wont gain any muscles! When I do the push-ups or sit-ups I keep pushing my self until I know I can't do any more - and at that stage I do 5 or 10 more. That's the way to do it :)

I also run around 2 times a week. I run around 5 km (or something similar).

Doing some sport

I play soccer at least 2 times pr. week.

I don't overeat

I eat around 5 times a day and it's small portions. I only overeat if I really like the food [like moms Bosnian food... ;)]

No diets for me

I never do diets, but I like to eat healthy. I seldom drink soft drinks - I mostly drink pure water. When I eat I always drink water.

Tips for you

  • Exercise everyday. Do it in your home or in the gym. In the home you can do push-ups, sit-ups, etc.... You could also run, swim or bicycle. Remember that when you do your exercise you must give yourself 100%. Being sloppy is a waste of time.
  • Do some sport - everything goes, and I am pretty sure you can find a physical sport that you like.
  • Eat often pr. day. Eat small portions. This way there isn't a chance that you will overeat (i.e. take more food than you actually need).
  • Don't drink soft-drinks. Drink pure water.
  • Diets are BAD since they disturb your body. It's much better to have a healthy life-style.
  • Fast-food, chocolate etc. is ok once in a while, but don't do it everyday. If you have a problem with sweet-stuff, then don't buy it when you go shopping.

Remember that good physical shape takes some effort and a lot of time. If you follow my tips you will begin to see some real results after 3 months or so.

What you will gain in return? Healthier body, more energy to live your life, better self-esteem, a great body and maybe a girlfriend :)

I hope you found my tips useful. Happy body-hacking :)

These tips are good advice. Since I left college I've been gaining weight steadily due to lack of exercise. I'm 1.85m tall, and back in November 2004 I weighed 78kg. I haven't weighed myself in ages, but if I were to guess my present weight I'd say it's probably around 86kg!

I actually started doing push-ups and sit-ups a few months back, but gave up, mostly due to lack of motivation. I think I'd better start doing them again...

Hi Ralph

Push-ups and sit-ups are great and I recommend them :) And if you want to see some kick-ass results, then try to mix them with some sport.

About motivation: I also sometimes lack motivation and I solve it by just doing it. Exercise is actually quite additive and it's just about breaking the first (and hard) barrier.

good advice, but kind of common sense.

Good workout for those that don't already do something. The biggest thing is to take up a sport. It is something that you will enjoy and get you in shape.

let's see that six pack!

Justin:
Getting in shape can be achieved by commonsense. There is no magic to it (as I see it). That's exactly the point of this post :)

Hehe, you wish ;)

Long time ago I visited a site from a chubby guy that made a transformation from chubby to a body-builder. He did it in one year!

Check out the amazing picture series:

Whats the difference between push ups and push ups for the chest?

Jeff:
For "normal" push-ups I place my hands a bit away from my shoulders. For "chest" push-ups I place my hands under my chest (so the hands are really close to each other). Normal push-ups mostly train arm muscles, the chest push-ups mostly train the chest (or so it feels).

Aah, tiger press-ups. Place your hands with your thumbs and fingers making a rough square, and keeping your back straight, touch your chest to your hands. Ouch. How can you do THIRTY of those!?

How to get and stay in shape:
Step 1: Replace car with bike
Step 2: Profit!

In all seriousness though, I've given up driving except in the odd instance when I need to get something I can't fit in my backpack or the kiddie triler. You'd be surprised how quickly you get used to hauling 75 lbs of groceries. Also, as far as water goes, I fill up a 2 liter camelback at least twice a day.

Having a six pack has nothing to do with training. Getting a six pack is 5% stomach muscle training and 95% losing fat! Actually most people have a perfect six pack, but buried under tons of fat, you simply can't see it! And for losing fat, push-ups or sit-ups do nothing for you! Despite the fact that I'm overweight, I can do about 25 sit-ups in a row, then a 5 minute break and repeat that 6 times, which gives me 150 sit ups and you won't lose weight through it, sit ups are not wasting enough energy.

I think the real good tip here is *running* (playing soccer is running as well). Running 5 km burns more calories than doing 100 push ups and 200 sit ups easily. Whenever you think you go somewhere by car, think again. Maybe you can walk there (walking one km is actually not too hard, you'll get soon used to it). I never take the car when going shopping, I walk, even if I walk 2 km. If me feed get tired, I can still take a bus on my way home. Go running twice a week, and if it's only 1 km, doesn't matter, when you feel you can't go on, stop it. It's not how far you can run, it is only about that you as far as you can. Run slowly, it's not about speed, it's no championship (running longer burns more calories than running faster!).

And control how much you eat. If you don't eat more calories than you burn a day, you'll never get fat in the first place, whether you exercise or not.

Markus:
You are absolutely right that one must loose body fat to see the six-pack, but that's pretty logical. And you are also right that sit-ups and push-ups won't fulfil the exercise that's needed to stay fit.

I disagree that most people have a defined six-pack underneath the fat. The abdominal muscle needs exercice to be defined (like all the other muscles).

Anyway, don't underestimate push-ups or sit-ups. Doing around 50 push-ups pr. day will result in around 18000 pr. year...

Awesome man! A geek with a six pack! I need a six pack!

I have given some thought about switching the car with a bicycle (where possible).
I think it's a great idea, but that switch should not replace real exercise. Bicycling to work/school gives some exercise, but it's not stressful enough. To gain some real results one needs to stress the muscles.

I'm quite lucky where I live. I have TONS of cyclepaths in the city witch are usally old railway lines. One I can get from the south of the city to the north of the city in just over 45 mins!!!!

Actually most people have a perfect six pack, but buried under tons of fat, you simply can't see it! And for losing fat, push-ups or sit-ups do nothing for you!

THAT'S JUST PLAIN WRONG. THEY DO DO SOMETHING, BECAUSE BUILDING MUSCLE BURNS MORE CALORIES THAN FAT DOES, TUBBY.

how goes a skinny guy gain weight and muscle FAST?

i need to now how to get a six pack real quike....any one got any tips...

I am really glad that you mentioned the eating small portions tip. A lot of people think that the key to losing weight is eating less! Personally, I recommend eating 5 meals a day. I usually go with a half of a normal portion per meal, except for breakfast, where I eat a whole portion. If you develop an eating strategy like this, you will slowly speed up your metabolism, and in turn, trim up- or down, whichever you want to say!

I would choose Iraq. Since we are at war with Iraq, adoption is closed there. Babies there are left in the streets and trucks are assigned to pick them up and dispose of them. It's a terrible country to be a child in right now, so that's what my decision is based on...thanks
