The future is clouded
2008 has really been a year of clouds and I think the future will be even more clouded.
Looking on the market today there are some great offers, such as:
Especially Amazon's stack is pretty impressive and is already used by some startups. 37 Signals is also looking into porting some of their applications to Amazon's cloud.
I think Amazon's and Google's offers are really wonderful for smaller sites and smaller startups. They enable even cheaper entry to the web-market and ability to scale upwards as the site grows. I pay around 350$ pr. month for hosting of Todoist and I think it would be a lot cheaper, easier to scale and more secure if I used Amazons stack. The only drawback of using cloud computing is that once data is stored in the cloud, then it's basically locked and it is pretty hard to move away. It's a hard choice, but I see a lot of opportunities for people that prefer ease of scaling and saving big bucks on hosting.
