The disco effect

In Denmark it's common that discothèques try to gather girls by giving them free entry or cheap/free drinks. The general pattern is to attract girls, since girls attract guys.

I think this pattern is applicable to social networks and dating sites as well, e.g.:

Attract hot females and males will follow. Attract celebrities and their fans will follow.

That is the disco effect and I think it's very important if you are building _any_ kind of social site. E.g. if you are building a site for Python programmers, try to get accepted by the leaders in the Python community, because if the leaders think your site is hot, then the rest will also think your site is hot.
