Getting organized with Todoist sidebar

A step forward for personal productivity is a new Todoist sidebar which offers following features:
  • A toolbar button is added, clicking on it will launch a minified version of Todoist
  • The sidebar is cached, so toggling it is super fast and all the state is saved
  • The sidebar can be opened with ALT-Q keyboard short cut as well

Shortly said: the sidebar makes it possible to view tasks in a split-second! Before we proceed to see what more the sidebar offers, let's get a quick look how it looks like:

Todoist sidebar

Bookmarking service

I personally visit a lot of sites and I would like to bookmark some of them and add them as tasks. A suggestion of things that are linkable and taskable:

  • Articles that you want to read
  • Bug reports
  • Gift ideas for your mom's birthday
  • Interesting stuff
  • Research for your Japan trip

Todoist sidebar helps you with this issue and makes bookmarking trivial, since it knows which sites you are visiting - a site bookmark is a click away.

Integration with Gmail

A proper Gmail integration is added as well! The sidebar can be used in following ways:

  • When reading a Gmail email, you have the option to add it as task (with one click!)
  • A Gmail task will be a link that links directly to that email

Shortly said: Todoist sidebar will interact with Gmail and give you the options to better manage your inbox. It's a feature I really need.

Install it

If you use Firefox 2, 3 you can install it easily:

Try it out, even if you don't currently use Todoist.

Ohh that's really cool. Finally I can manage my todo's from my browser in short time..Thanks amix & keep it up ;D

Wow, a great step forward I think. Any chance we'll see the Add email link work for Google Apps in the near future?

@Shawn:
It should work with Google Apps now (I have at least tested it :)).

It sounds very useful, but I don't use Firefox. Maybe you should consider a cross-browser solution.

@amix yep, it's working. thanks!

Excellent!!! I'm going to be testing this out. When I've used it for a bit I'll review it on my blog. I just mentioned your site in a recent article I wrote on productivity. This will make an excellent addition.

I love it. Really useful integration with Gmail :) Thank you for keeping us organized!

The only bad thing about the plugin is that I haven't used the site version of Todoist for days :)

Great work.

The only thing I really disliked is that my browser history and bookmarks are on side of Todoist sidebar.

There's one issue I'd like to mention.
Could you set the sidebar side as an optional setting? Now it uses an arbitrary way of moving the sidebar on the right side.
I use the All In One Sidebar extension that can set the sidebar on the left or right side. But after i install the todoist extension that setting doesn't work.
Todoist supersedes(?) the setting.

Making the left or right option optional would be more than welcomed.

I love it. This extension just made me start using todoist again, and I'm now even thinking about buying a Pro subscription. It's great to see the attention coming back to todoist lately. It's very encouraging; keep up the great work! One thing I'd request for this extension is to not make it fixed width. I don't mind a horizontal scrollbar as much as I mind a huge sidebar. Also as previously mentioned, the right vs left side option would be nice.

I can't wait for Google Calendar integration, and I have my fingers crossed for email/txt items to todoist.

There is a new version of plugin out that does not force other extensions to be launched on the right. The width should also be resizeable.

I've updated and Todoist still loads on the right, while All In One Sidebar loads on the left(the first version loaded AiOS on the right as well).

P.S. The "Visit Home Page" links to todoist.com.com

...I also think a keyboard shortcut would be useful as well.

I missed this part: "The sidebar can be opened with ALT-Q keyboard short cut as well "...

hi amix, you think you can parse the date and reminder as a task string ?

TASK EXAMPLE:

tell amix all about it @ 12 tod @ r 22(reminder)

Amix:
Todoist is the best !!
This extension gives more usability to it!!
Thanks!

Add it to https://addons.mozilla.org/

This sounds great, but I'm having trouble downloading it. It just pops open a new window when I click the link, and nothing happens.

doesnt work for me with FF3. For some reason the new features dont show up in my sidebar. i cannot add tasks, nor links, nor mails... :-(

i found my mistake. i didnt get the fact that adding items is only possible in project view...

This is pretty nice, is there any way to make the sidebar work within Google Desktop or an AIR app to keep it on the desktop?

wow Amir! thanks! > tx for all the effort & tx for the work & tx for sharing!!

Please, CHANGE its default position from left to right!!!.. its more effective way of eyeballs scroll through screen, i love addon but hate the way its placed on my screen..

Are there any keyboard short cuts for "reorder" and "add email" or "add web site". I often have long (uncollapsed) lists and this would make it quicker to place things where I wan them.

Thanks again for creating this sidebar.

Thanks for adding a sidebar! Very handy. But:

- It's still a bit buggy. E.g. the word "undefined" appears next to each item on my list for some reason. How can I get rid of it? Also, I can't switch to a project view and thus can't add new tasks. I can only see items I added a due date to.

- Please consider making it more customizable. E.g. Currently I can only resize it 1 way -- by making it wider. But I'd like it narrower. And I'd like to dock it on the left side of my browser window, like on Windows (although clearly some Windows users would like to dock it on the right side, as on Macs). It'd be nice if a pop-up window was possible too.

(Btw - I use Mac OS X 10.4, FF3.)

What's the latest version number?? I am having slight problems with the extension ver 1.1. After installing, it changes the behaviour of tab mix plus - search box/bar items no longer launch in a new tab.

Is this an oversight?

I like Todoist (we just met :-)) and I like this sidebar, but is there a way to use it in my standard browser Opera? You can easily load web pages as sidebars (or, as they say: panels) in Opera, so I just need the URL of the page this Firefox add-on refers to. Could you please post it?

It might be interesting to add this 'sidebar' link to your post with the special html attribute 'rel="sidebar"'. This way the link will automatically be added as a new Opera panel when you click on it. This will make all us Opera fans very happy :-)

More info: http://www.opera.com/support/t...

Never mind: found it! I had a look at the igoogle/netvibes widgets and discovered that it is essentially the same thing :-)

You can add this as an Opera panel by going to http://todoist.com/?mini=1 and saving the page as a bookmark. When saving you have the option to display the page in a panel :-)

Another trick is to have Todoist always on the Desktop.
The procedure is simple. Just follow the guide here http://thirderror.com/your-rem... and then, when the address part comes you add this address: http://todoist.com/?mini=1

Now, you have no choice but to do what's on your todoist ;)

I love todoist because of the FF plugin, but am having issues with the plugin. It is blocking the display of the bookmarks, history, downloads, add-ons when they are clicked on. While it changes the name at the top of the sidebar, it continues to display the todoist list instead of switching.

I'm having the same problem as Craiger. Very annoying bug in an otherwise great extension. PLEASE FIX

Hi Amir,

since yesterday STRG+N (adding a linebreak in a task) does not work anymore - it opens a new Firefox window instead. I'm using FF 3.0.1 under Vista 64bit - but as I said, it worked before, I didn't change anything on purpose.

Cheers
Matthias

Thx for solving this quickly ! Greets from Germany.

When will you have an add-on that works with Google Chrome?

really cool stuff, simple and as much organisation as I can deal with... now, any option of a custom start up view will ALL items listed by categories. If you try to stick to the GTD idea of having 4 levels (next action, action, waiting on, some time) it makes sense to have an overview sorted by priority...

Any way to make this compatible with Sunbird? This would be an amazing time saver as it would keep me outta firefox and into actually getting things done ;)

I love it. Really useful integration with Gmail :) Thank you for keeping us organized!

Hi Guys,

The plugin does not work for me on FF 3.03 on OSX.

S

Good stuff. Excellent integration with gmail. You rock.

I like the integration with gmail, very convenient.

Very useful. Thank You

any chance to allow the customization for opening the sidebar on the left of the browser? great job otherwise! this is by far the only firefox friendly addon which doesn't suck

Yeah, i think its worth a try. That's why i like firefox, you have better add-ons :)

Thanks man that can really mange up my FF all the time i am browsing ;)

Todoist is the best !!
This extension gives more usability to it I think

Truly said it will get you more organized rather then simple form of firefox you can do many things and stay up to date ;)

I do agree with Pantich it looks well organized and much better to do things easily. Open any thing for one just one click. Thats the reason Firefox is love of most of the webmasters around the world. Million Add-on's to meet the needs of Webmasters.

When will you have an add-on that works with Google Chrome?

@ celebrity justice. I dont find any add-ons working with google chrome yet. Google must have made add ons for chrome.

I hope there will be some addons for Chrome.

@ albertville, I am pretty sure that they will come soon or late. Firefox has become so popular because of that.
