Keeping the focus

I know a great kebab place where they only serve kebabs, they don't serve pizza, they don't serve chicken kebab, they don't serve any other food than beef kebab (shawarma). The place is always full and there's a line of customers waiting. The kebab is very delicious, the best kebab I have ever eaten.

I wish a lot of other restaurants could keep the same focus. A pizzeria should focus on creating a delicious pizza - and most of them have a crappy pizza and do a lot of other stuff like kebab, pasta, lasagne, hot dogs etc. Why do they do this? Maybe because they think they can create extra revenue by appealing to more people.

Fast forward this thought to software and I think the same rule applies. A lot of companies try to make software that appeal to a lot of users, they even try to add crazy features that don't fit in their idea. The bottom line is that they end up like mediocre restaurants: they focus on a lot of things and end up being crappy to everything.

Google search engine is a prime example of a focused product that does one thing amazingly good: search.

The bottom line is:

  • if you want to create a sushi place, then focus on making the best god damn sushi place and don't start to introduce pizzas
