Manage Gmail like a pro

Gmail is a great email reader. Todoist is a great task manager. Combine them and you get the best of both worlds! Gmail+Todoist integration offers you following things:
  • Delegate emails to Todoist directly from Gmail - with a single click!
  • Sort your emails into projects.
  • Assign due dates to emails, this way you wont forget to answer important emails.
  • Read or answer emails directly from Todoist using Gmails known interface.

And the best of it all: It takes around 30 seconds to get started and it works in any browser! Read below to see how it works.

Delegate emails from Gmail

An important email pops in into your inbox and you don't have time to process it. What do you do? You press Delegate to Todoist bookmark link:

Delegate emails from Gmail

A task is added to Todoist

A special Gmail task is added instantly, it acts like other Todoist tasks, but it's clickable and has a Gmail icon:

A Gmail task

Ready to process the email?

When you are ready to process the email, you simply click on it and Todoist opens the email in Gmail "light mode":

Gmail light mode

How to get started?

Not a Todoist user? Then sign up - it's free.

After you are logged in, read the Gmail integration guide on Todoist info page. You can also view it online.

Privacy

Todoist does not store your emails or your Gmail login information. In order to use this feature, you must be logged in both Todoist and Gmail.

Update: Native Firefox plugin

[ICR], one of Todoist users, has created a native Firefox plugin, read more about it.

Just one word:
WHOA!

Now, I'm off to try this new feature.

Just another word :
WHOA !

Once again, you surprised me with an incredibly well-thinked feature !
Kudos !

It doesn't seem to work for me. I'm logged in on both Gmail and Todoist, but when I click the Delegate to Todoist bookmark nothing happens and I get a "top.js.Pb.Gl is not a function" error in Firebug.

After i log-in to Gmail and Todoist, and open an email, i click on the Delegate button, and i get this error: The server has either erred or is incapable of performing the requested operation.

I'm using Firefox.

Yeah I got the same error (top.js.Pb.Gl is not a function) in Firebug.

A very nice feature.

For those who use Firefox, I wrote a plugin (link) that adds a "Add to Todoist" link to gmail.

I am currently fixing this issue, it seems like there are different versions of Gmail out there. Gmail is such a mess.

Anyway, stay tuned.

That is really slick, ICR. But it still doesn't work on my version of Gmail...

Can you make this work with Google Apps (Gmail for your domain)? or is that the "different versions" of Gmail you're talking about?

I have great news:

  • All the issues should be fixed!

Update your bookmark link from the install guide and you should be ready to go.

This was one really intense JavaScript hacking session. Let's hope it's over.

ICR:
Very interesting idea. I have it installed, but I don't see a link. Where have you hidden it ;)?

Ross:
It should work with any Gmail version out there.

It should be at the bottom of every message, next to the Reply and Forward. If it's not there, check if GmailSkins works, as that's what a large portion of my code is based on.
It whitelists the URL, so if you're not using mail.google.com it won't work.

Really sweet. Definitely going to make me stay with todoist.

ICR:
Very nice work! I now link up to your plug-in.

ICR, well done!
One more reason to use Gmail and Todoist together.

Thanks.

This still doesn't work for me! :(

Now I get two errors in Firebug instead of one. The first one is a "win has no properties" error on win.focus() which can be found on line 13 in http://todoist.com/getGmailJav.... The second error says "top.main.SendJS is not a function".

Mike:
That's bad news. Could you please send me your email and we can try to debug the problem. My email is amix@amix.dk.

Mike:
Great news, I debugged your problem and I found it.

The problem is the pop-up blocker. In order for this to work, you should allow pop-ups from "mail.google.com". You can allow this by going to Firefox preferences -> Content tab -> Block pop-up windows -> Exceptions -> Add "mail.google.com".

That did the trick Amir! Thanks alot!

Good work! I am so happy to see an integration of applications.

Great stuff. The close radio button does not work for me but the top right hand one does. No issues. Great integration.

The best just got better. Wow!

I'm getting a problem that I think is in the date format for the Delegate add-on. My Todoist preferences are sent to handle dates as MM/DD/YY, but I've noticed items delegated to Todoist from Gmail often have the date wrong, as DD/MM/YY.

amazing idea, altought there is a small problem for me:

[gmail=xxxxxxxxxx @gmail, Demande de participation - 26 aout - Bromont]

the fact that the label gmail (@gmail) is immediately followed by a comma causes the tag to be saved as gmail" (trailing quote), . If I edit the text and put a space between the comma and the gmail tag (@gmail ,) everything is fine.

Following on my last comment, clicking on the email link opens a gmail page telling the conversation has been deleted.

Putting a space between the label and the comma solves the problem once again.

BTW i'm using safari 3.0.2

JK:
I fixed the bug today.

is this still working with gmail2? i'm not getting any joy with it - or with the firefox extension... would be so great to have this working...

this seems to have stopped working over the last few weeks.

I get the error "html has no properties"
http://todoist.com/getGmailJav...
I depend on 'delegate to todoist', hope it works soon

'delegate to todoist' works in gmail's "older version", does not work in "newer version" - this may have been the case for a while now

gracias amigox
