Why computer science is fun
I have been a computer science (CS) student for 2 years and it's fun! Seriously, I really can't understand that popularity of CS is decreasing!? In this little blog post I will tell why CS is fun and different and why the field has a lot of potential. I know my timing is a bit bad (since new students have already started), but I got the idea today while speaking with someone at work and I just want to be heard :)
Computer science branchesComputer science isn't only about code! Let me name a few of the CS branches:
With a little you can create a lotComputer science is virtual, meaning that you, your tools and your computer can create amazing things. In physics you need very expensive equipment, in chemistry, in biology, engineering etc. as well. In CS you can create something out of nothing. Filthy richMoney should not be your drive, but there is a lot of money out there for CS people. Unemployment for CS graduates is around "0%" in Denmark and it's a very well payed job. You can also create your own venture without so much capital - since computers are really cheap. The education is funAarhus University has a great CS program where there is a great mix of theory and practise. I mean, the most fun course I have had has been "Semantics" (meaning of code) - a theory course, who would had thought that? For most parts of CS you can implement the theory you learn (and in a lot of courses we do). The field is very newOnly around 60 years of serious research has been done in CS. Now, just imagine your potential...! Compare that with mathematics. that has been studied for thousands of years. Girls are welcomedComputer science has a bad name or at least it seems so... There simply aren't any girls in CS. Seriously girls: CS can be something for you! I mean, be different, give it a chance and you will be hooked! |
